In the church world we can think about Religion in a negative light, thinking want relationship over religion. James doesn't let us live in a world were we can think of religion in a negative light. His thoughts on shallow uncommitted Christians are the same as what we in our days would call religion, but James tells us of a true religion that makes God pleased.
